Monroe Elementary
Monroe Elementary is dedicated to building a strong educational foundation for all students in grades kindergarten through sixth, which will better prepare students for the academic rigor of higher education. Our primary students are immersed in curriculum aligned to Ohio's Academic Content Standards. The primary students receive instruction in the academic areas of reading, writing, math, citizenship and science. The basics of reading, writing and math are emphasized in the primary years. Students in grades kindergarten through second are assessed periodically using Ohio's Diagnostic Assessments. These diagnostic assessments serve as tools to help classroom teachers identify students' needs and to strengthen classroom instruction.
ike the primary grades, the curriculum for grades three through six is also driven by the Ohio Academic Content Standards. Students in grades three through six are expanding their knowledge in reading, writing, math, citizenship and science and further developing critical thinking skills. Students in grades three, four and five will be assessed using the new testing system called Achievement Testing. Third grade students will take the Reading Achievement Test once in the fall and again in the spring. Grade four will take the Reading and Writing Achievement Test in the spring. Students in fifth grade will also complete a Reading Achievement test in the spring. Proficiency Tests will be given for the last time this year. Students in grade four will take proficiencies in math, science and citizenship. Sixth graders will take proficiencies in reading, writing, math, citizenship and science. Monroe Junior High School
In the junior high school, programming has focused on preparing students for the new state testing system called Achievement Testing. Students will take a Math Achievement Test in the seventh and eighth grade. Students will take a Reading Achievement Test in the eighth grade as well. These tests will occur on March 7th and 8th. You can find more information on the Ohio Department of Education Web site.
Our focus for this testing has been to improve critical thinking skills and communication skills so that students can not only perform well on tests, but be able to be successful in today's rapidly changing world.
Next year, the junior high programming will change to better transition students to high school life. Additional classes in Mathematics will be offered in the seventh grade to reinforce foundational skills needed to be successful throughout high school. Reading classes will be better differentiated to include a new program called Read 180 for focused instruction on foundational reading and writing skills. Advanced classes will also be offered in Science and Social Studies. Electives will focus on creating a well-rounded student and will require all students to take Art, Physical Education and Music at the seventh grade; and then, providing more choices in the eighth grade. Finally, all seventh grade students will take a study skills class to help them develop study habits, organizational skills and better assist them in changing classes.
Monroe High School
In the high school, programming has focused on preparing students for their careers and being productive citizens. The job market now requires students that have well-organized knowledge, skills at pattern recognition, initiative, metacognition and can perform complex communication skills including observing and listening, eliciting critical information, interpreting the information and conveying the interpretation to others. Therefore, our teaching staff has focused on incorporating these skills into each of their curriculums. Moreover, these skills will help them be successful on the Ohio Graduation tests, the new ACT, the new SAT, in technical schools, and in college. For more information regarding the new SAT, go to the College Board Web site and for the new ACT, go to ACT's student Web site.
All curriculums have been aligned to help students be successful on the new Ohio Graduation Test. Students must pass all five areas of the Ohio Graduation Test to graduate from high school. More information about this test can be found on the Ohio Department of Education's Web site - (pdf). You can also contact your child's counselor to receive a copy of this document. The state also provides a practice Web site for students.
Finally, this year the business curriculum and foreign language curriculum are being aligned to Ohio's new foreign language curriculum and Ohio's new technology curriculums. Look for these local curriculums to be posted on this Web site in summer of 2005.
