Monroe High School students hold talent show to raise money for food assistance

Nov 25, 2025

As Thanksgiving week kicks off and communities focus on gratitude, a group of local students is turning talent into generosity.

They're taking the stage for a special talent show, designed not just to entertain, but to make a real difference.

“The government did away with the SNAP program and so that leaves a lot of families without,” said Jessica Thorton, Intervention Specialist Teacher at Monroe HS. “We thought we need to do this.”

Students at Monroe High School are transforming music, comedy and dance into something far more meaningful: support for local food pantries.

“I was surprised that so many people wanted to do it,” said student Chloe Dykes.

Dykes first had the idea of doing a talent show last year.

“I just noticed all of the hardship that the people were going through out in the South and just from all the hurricanes,” Dykes said. “I just came to Mrs. Thorton and I asked her if we could try to come up with something in order to raise money.”

The talent show was a hit, raising thousands of dollars for the Red Cross. This year, the show is helping local families hit hard this holiday season.

“All the proceeds go to the food bank and is a for a great cause,” Thorton said.

Students say they're reminded that giving doesn't just have to come from a place of plenty, just a place of heart.

“We want to make the place, the community around us better,” said student Addison Thorton. “And so knowing that the money is going to a good cause, people are more willing to share and go do something with the school.”

As the curtain closes Tuesday night, organizers hope the generosity on display inspires the community long after the holiday season ends.

“I just hope that the money really makes a difference,” Dykes said. “And I'm proud of all of my classmates and that they were able to donate and come and enjoy this show, and that everyone really recognizes the need in our community and is willing to help fulfill it.”

The talent show raised more than $2,000 from the students. You can donate towards their efforts, supporting local food banks, by clicking here.
