Monroe Local Schools plans $62.1M expansion project to accommodate surging student population

A Greater Cincinnati school district is planning a major construction project to address a district-wide need.
Monroe Local Schools is building a new $62.1 million high school on its current campus, located at 220 Yankee Road in Monroe, to address its increasing student population.
The new facility will stand at approximately 140,000 square feet and serve grades 9-12, housing between 825 and 850 students. It will be constructed on the district’s current campus on about 9 acres, just southeast of the existing Monroe High School building.
Currently, Monroe’s 148-acre main campus has a three-winged building that houses grades 2-12. It opened in 2004 when the district had about 1,500 students. However, the student population has nearly doubled since and sits at about 2,900 students.
“When I first got hired, the board talked to me about overcrowding as an issue, but I honestly didn’t realize how badly the district needed additional space,” Superintendent J. Robert Buskirk told me. “We are bursting at the seams.”
